Best Time to Visit

From my experience, spring and early fall are absolutely magical times to explore this historical route. The weather’s usually just right – not too hot, not too cold – and you’ll catch either the spring blooms or the beautiful autumn colors. I particularly love doing this walk on Sunday mornings when the church bells are ringing and there’s this wonderful peaceful atmosphere about town.

Avoid rainy days if you can – those cobblestones can get pretty slippery! And while summer’s nice, July and August can get crowded with tourists, especially around the church area. Winter has its own charm though – I once did this walk during a light snowfall and it felt like stepping back in time.

How to Get There

The historical walking route is super easy to access from Beverwijk’s train station. I usually take the train from Amsterdam – it’s about a 30-minute ride. Once you’re at the station, it’s just a short 10-minute walk to where the historical route begins.

If you’re driving (like I did my first time), there’s plenty of parking available in the town center, though it can get busy on market days. Just follow the signs to the centrum and you’ll find several parking garages. Trust me, it’s worth getting here early to snag a good spot.

Tips for Visiting

Listen, I’ve learned a few things from my multiple visits that’ll make your experience even better. First off, wear comfortable shoes – those authentic cobblestones are gorgeous but they’re not exactly high-heel friendly! I made that mistake once and won’t do it again.

Bring a camera – you’ll kick yourself if you don’t. The lighting around the church is particularly beautiful in the late afternoon. Oh, and don’t forget to peek into the courtyards when gates are open – some of the prettiest spots are hidden from the main street.

Try to time your visit with the Sint Agathakerk’s opening hours if you want to see the interior. They’re usually open for visitors, but times can vary. I’d suggest checking their current schedule beforehand.

Pack a water bottle and maybe a snack. While there are plenty of cafes along the route, it’s nice to have the option to stop and rest in one of the peaceful courtyards without having to hunt for refreshments.

If you’re into photography like me, morning light creates beautiful shadows on the old buildings, and there’s usually fewer people around then. And don’t forget to look up – some of the best architectural details are above eye level!

Lastly, take your time. This isn’t a route to rush through. Stop, read the historical markers, and really soak in the atmosphere. Sometimes I’ll spend a good 15 minutes just sitting on a bench, watching local life unfold around me. It’s these moments that really make the experience special.
