Cachan
Description
Let me tell you about Cachan, one of those hidden gems in Paris’s southern suburbs that most tourists totally miss out on. I discovered this charming commune during my last trip to France, and honestly, it’s such a refreshing break from the tourist-packed streets of central Paris. Just a quick 6.7 kilometers from the heart of the City of Light, Cachan has this perfect blend of suburban calm and academic energy.
What really grabbed my attention here was the École Spéciale des Travaux Publics – it’s basically the MIT of French engineering schools. You’ll see students buzzing around the campus, giving the whole area this youthful, intellectual vibe. The architecture around the school is pretty impressive too, mixing old-school French design with some modern touches.
Key Features
• The gorgeous Parc Raspail, which I absolutely fell in love with – it’s got these amazing terraced gardens that’ll make you forget you’re just minutes from Paris
• École Spéciale des Travaux Publics campus – even if you’re not into engineering, the architecture is worth checking out
• Local markets that pop up throughout the week (way more authentic than the touristy ones in central Paris!)
• Historic aqueduct remains that tell stories from centuries ago
• Charming residential streets with typical French suburban architecture
• Several cozy cafes where you can grab a proper French breakfast without the central Paris price tag
Best Time to Visit
I’d say spring and early fall are your best bets for visiting Cachan. September and October are particularly lovely – the weather’s still warm, but you won’t be melting like you might in August. Plus, that’s when the student life really kicks in, giving the whole place an energetic atmosphere. If you’re coming in spring, April and May are gorgeous months when the Parc Raspail shows off its colors.
Avoid August if you can – lots of local businesses shut down for vacation, and the town gets pretty quiet. Winter can be nice too, especially if you’re into photography – the morning frost on the historic buildings makes for some amazing shots.
How to Get There
Getting to Cachan is actually super easy – and that’s coming from someone who usually gets lost everywhere! The RER B line is your best friend here. Just hop on at any major Paris station (I usually get on at Saint-Michel Notre-Dame) and head south. You’ll be there in about 20 minutes, which is nothing compared to some other suburban trips I’ve made.
There’s also a decent bus network connecting Cachan to neighboring areas. But honestly? The RER is your best bet unless you’re coming from nearby suburbs. Just make sure you’ve got your Navigo pass or a ticket that covers zones 1-3.
Tips for Visiting
Okay, so here’s what I wish someone had told me before my first visit to Cachan. First off, don’t expect the same opening hours as central Paris – this is suburban living at its finest, which means some shops might close for lunch. Plan your meals accordingly!
Try to learn a few basic French phrases. Unlike central Paris, where everyone’s used to tourists, the locals here really appreciate it when visitors make an effort to speak their language. Even a simple “Bonjour” goes a long way.
The market days are worth planning around – but get there early! The best stuff goes quick, and you’ll get to see the locals in their element. Keep some cash handy too – not every small shop takes cards.
If you’re into photography, the early morning light hits the old aqueduct remains just right. And don’t skip Parc Raspail – it’s especially peaceful in the late afternoon when locals come out for their evening strolls.
Also, while you’re here, take time to just wander. Some of my favorite spots were places I found just by getting a bit lost. The residential streets have this authentic French charm that you just don’t find in the more touristy areas of Paris.
Remember that this is a student town during the academic year, which means there’s usually something interesting happening around campus. Check out the local bulletin boards – you might stumble upon a cool event or exhibition.
