Best Time to Visit

From my experience (and trust me, I’ve been here in all seasons!), late spring through early fall is absolutely prime time for visiting Lac de la Taillat. May through September offers the most reliable weather, with temperatures perfect for outdoor activities. But here’s a little insider tip – September is actually my favorite month to visit. The summer crowds have thinned out, the weather’s still lovely, and you get these amazing golden hours for photography.

The lake really comes alive in the early mornings, especially between 7 and 9 AM, when the water’s like glass and local fishermen are setting up for the day. And don’t even get me started on those sunset views – they’re absolutely incredible from about 6 PM onwards during summer months.

How to Get There

Getting to Lac de la Taillat is pretty straightforward, though you’ll definitely want your own wheels. The lake sits near the Isère River, and you can reach it via several well-marked roads from the nearby towns. If you’re coming by public transport, you’ll need to catch a bus to the nearest town and then maybe grab a taxi for the last stretch – just being honest here!

The parking situation is decent, with several lots available around different access points to the lake. Just remember that the main lot fills up pretty quick on sunny weekends, so getting there early is your best bet. I learned that one the hard way!

Tips for Visiting

Look, I’ve made plenty of rookie mistakes here, so let me save you some trouble! First off, bring proper walking shoes – those lakeside trails can get a bit uneven in places. And while there’s plenty of shade from the trees, you’ll still want to pack sunscreen and a hat because some sections are pretty exposed.

If you’re planning to fish, make sure you grab a fishing permit beforehand – the local authorities do check! Pack a picnic too – there aren’t any restaurants right by the lake, and trust me, you’ll want to spend more time here than you initially planned.

Water levels can change throughout the year, so don’t be surprised if the lake looks different from photos you’ve seen online. The best spots for photos are along the eastern shore in the morning and the western shore in the evening – you’re welcome for that little photography tip!

Oh, and bring cash! Some of the parking meters don’t accept cards (learned that one the hard way). During summer weekends, try to arrive before 10 AM to snag a good parking spot and avoid the peak heat of the day.

Keep in mind that the trails can get a bit muddy after rain, so check the weather forecast before your visit. And here’s something most guides won’t tell you – the north side of the lake tends to be quieter and more peaceful, perfect if you’re looking to escape the crowds.

Bug spray is your friend, especially during dusk hours in summer months. And while it might seem obvious, bring plenty of water – the drinking fountains aren’t always working, and you’ll want to stay hydrated while exploring this gorgeous spot!
