Xico Pueblo Mágico
Description
Xico stands proud as one of Mexico’s treasured Pueblos Mágicos (Magical Towns), and let me tell ya – it absolutely lives up to that enchanting title! This colonial gem in Veracruz state captured my heart with its cobblestone streets, red-tiled roofs, and the kind of authentic Mexican charm that’s getting harder to find these days.
The town’s got this incredible backdrop of misty mountains and coffee plantations that’ll make you feel like you’ve stepped into a painting. And speaking of coffee – the local brew here is something else! I still dream about that rich aroma wafting from the cafes along the main square.
But what really sets Xico apart is its unique blend of traditional Mexican culture and natural wonders. The town literally has waterfalls right on its doorstep! The most famous one, Cascada de Texolo, is this jaw-dropping 80-meter drop that’ll have your Instagram followers double-tapping like crazy.
Key Features
- María Magdalena Church – a stunning colonial masterpiece that hosts the famous Festival of Santa María Magdalena in July
- Cascada de Texolo – the crown jewel of Xico’s natural attractions
- Traditional mole xiqueño – trust me, you haven’t really had mole until you’ve tried Xico’s version
- Coffee plantations offering tours and tastings
- Local handicraft markets selling beautiful textiles and artwork
- Historic center with well-preserved colonial architecture
- Surrounding cloud forests perfect for hiking and nature photography
Best Time to Visit
Y’know what? I’ve found that July is absolutely spectacular here – that’s when the town comes alive during the Festival of Santa María Magdalena. But if crowds aren’t your thing (and believe me, it gets packed), I’d suggest visiting between October and March when the weather’s mild and perfect for exploring.
The coffee harvest season (November to January) is another amazing time to visit. You can actually see the whole process and taste some of the freshest coffee you’ll ever have in your life. Just pack a light jacket – evenings can get pretty chilly up here in the mountains!
How to Get There
Getting to Xico is part of the adventure! The closest major city is Xalapa, the capital of Veracruz state. From there, it’s about a 30-minute drive south. You’ve got a few options:
If you’re driving (which I totally recommend for the flexibility), just follow the signs from Xalapa – the road winds through some gorgeous mountain scenery. Taking a taxi from Xalapa is another solid choice, or you can hop on one of the frequent local buses that run between the two cities.
The nearest airport is El Lencero Airport in Xalapa, but most international travelers fly into Veracruz’s International Airport and make their way from there. It’s about a 2-hour drive, but the views make it worth every minute.
Tips for Visiting
Listen up, ’cause these tips might just save your trip! First off, bring cash – lots of small businesses don’t take cards, and the nearest ATM might not always work (learned that one the hard way). And while Spanish isn’t absolutely necessary, learning a few basic phrases will get you far with the super-friendly locals.
Don’t rush through Xico in a day trip – give yourself at least two days to really soak it in. The mornings here are magical, especially when the mist rolls through the mountains. Try to schedule your waterfall visit for early morning when the light’s perfect for photos and the crowds are thin.
Oh, and here’s something I wish someone had told me: the altitude here is no joke! At around 4,300 feet above sea level, you might feel a bit winded at first. Take it easy, stay hydrated, and maybe skip that extra cup of (amazing) coffee until you’ve acclimated.
Pro tip: book your accommodation in advance during the July festival – things fill up crazy fast. And don’t forget to try the local liquor, Licor de Xico. It’s made from fresh fruit and goes down way too easy, if you know what I mean!
